Mission
The PLUS mission incorporates the power of the peer group model and the sense of belonging that develops when individuals feel an identity to a group. The PLUS model creates a culture on campuses and in communities where inclusion is a reality for young people. This inclusion serves as the catalyst for youth to engage in positive actions which will develop their self worth and identity to a credible social group.
History
In 1999 John Vandenburgh created an identity for youth in American schools called PLUS (Peer Leaders Uniting Students). To become part of PLUS a student must go through a forum, which is set of activities that serve as a right of passage to the PLUS identity. In these forums students share their own stories about who they are, which leads to understanding, respect and connections between the students. Through interactive activities and engaging discussions they develop an understanding of the real issues that are in each others lives. Each forum is held with 60 students and unfolds like a theatrical play where discussions range from racism and violence to bullying and gossip. The emotions of these discussions, is what drives students to discover empathy for one another. An emphasis is put on developing a strong understanding of having a positive sense of purpose, which is embedded in the PLUS identity.
The forums are facilitated by a trained team of peers who are called the PLUS Team. The PLUS Team is hand selected and includes a diverse group of students who bring a natural credibility to the identity of PLUS. This PLUS Team will continue hosting forums and campus activities throughout the year. The PLUS Program proves what research is showing :
Peer based programs make the greatest strides in targeting core campus issues.
